Class Policies

OCDSB RULES:
The APPROPRIATE USE OF TECHNOLOGY of the OCDSB can be found here.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES:

  • Attend class every day and be on time.
  • Be prepared:
    • Have all learning materials and completed homework with you
    • Be ready to learn
  • Respect others’ feelings and personal space
    • Use earbuds/headphones to edit sound in your projects
    • NEVER do anything that might cause a student to lose their work. This includes situations such as:
      • Turning off someone’s computer
      • Unplugging any cables
      • Using their computer without permission
    • If you see another student has accidentally left their user account open, close it for them … they will do the same for you.
  • Wait your turn to speak; listen attentively while someone else is speaking
  • Do not abuse the equipment or you may lose your privileges
  • Do not do anything that will change or compromise the computers…ever!
  • Be patient with computers that crash or freeze – it WILL happen often due to the demanding software we use in the course. It’s your responsibility to anticipate and prevent data loss.
  • Do not use the computer as a personal music player – either by playing a music CD or by streaming media through the network; it puts unnecessary wear and tear on the hardware and on the school’s bandwidth.
  • Consume all food and drink (except bottled water) outside of the classroom.
  • Students will maintain a portfolio that will be filed in the lab. It will be the students’ responsibility to maintain a copy of their best performances and specified required material in their portfolio. This portfolio will be checked and evaluated as the students’ ISU.
  • To help prevent distractions and inattentiveness, any music device (CD players, mp3 players, etc…) are not permitted in class unless the teacher has given permission.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Any student under the age of 18 must have a note explaining a recent absence.

  • Bring the note directly to the front office
  • Inform your teacher that you have brought the note in.

If you know you are going to miss an upcoming class – it is your responsibility to:

  • Inform the instructor in advance
  • Have a classmate take notes for you on the day you miss class (if applicable)
  • Catch up on the missed work on your own time

You can NOT expect to catch up DURING upcoming classes – that would leave you further behind in your current studies.
The solution is for you to GET CAUGHT UP on your OWN time!

BE ON TIME
Nothing irritates a teacher more than a student that shows up late for no reason.

USE OF CELL PHONES
In accordance with Merivale’s school rules, cell phones will ONLY BE BE PERMITTED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES and WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE TEACHER. Be sure to turn your ringer off too. (Page 11 of your student planner)

GENERAL SAFETY:
Students are expected to follow the safety guidelines established at the beginning of the course. These guidelines include the classroom, equipment, personal safety, and on-location projects.

If a user violates any of the above conditions of use, one or more of the following consequences may ensue:

  • Suspension or cancellation of access privileges
  • Payments for damages and repairs
  • Discipline under other relevant Board policies; such as suspension or expulsion
  • Civil or criminal liability under other relevant laws

LAB HOURS:
The lab can be made available outside of class hours. Please discuss any extra time needed with your teacher and do not assume that the lab will always be available. Simply put, if the teacher knows you are coming they will make sure that the lab stays open for you. The best time to get extra help/extra time is during lunch.
